seasonoflove

This is the  third installment of my Season of Love: Countdown to Valentine’s Day series. Today I am going to share with you some God-Centered fun activities to do with your kids on Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is a time that we use to celebrate and reflect on loving others and how we are loved. We know that God is love. So let’s put Him smack dab in the center of all our Valentine’s Day festivities. So here are some ideas I’m thinking of  using myself to celebrate this day with my children. Stick around there is a party at the end of this post.

MovieNight

Last Night I watched an awesome VeggieTales movie with the kids called “Beauty and the Beet.” What makes the VeggieTales movie franchise so much fun to watch is that these movies are funny, well-written, the characters are fun, the music is awesome and it always has a very good lesson that is biblical. That is no different with “Beauty and the Beet.” I really loved the music in this movie too. One of the songs is so beautiful, it made me cry a little bit. The lesson in this movie is about showing love to others, even when it is hard to do, for instance, even when that person is being mean to you. Which I think is a perfect Valentine’s Day love themed movie.

snacks Below are some great snacks to try. I found these recipes on Pinterest. Gotta love Pinterest. Heart-Shaped Rice Krispie Treat Pops, Snickers Pretzel Bites and all kinds of fun popcorn recipes. Click the images below to link to the recipes. In terms of the Snickers Pretzel Bites, my kids and I did those yesterday. They loved them. To make them more Valentine’s themed I’d replace the brown chocolate with red, pink and/or white chocolate melts. I used white chocolate with mine yesterday. I will be sharing pics of this for Sunday’s Show ‘n’ Tell.

Here is a fun game idea for the kids to play, during the day before kitchen time and movie night time. You cut blank paper into some small heart shapes and you write on each paper one thing you love about them, then you let them go hunting all over the house for these notes and read them when they have found them all.

Here is a fun spin to it, let everyone in the family who can write (have someone write on behalf of those who can’t, but can say what they feel), write on some hearts what they love about each other and what they love about God. Maybe one-two things per each other person, e.g sister would write 2 heart notes for dad, 2 for brother, 2 for mom, 2 for God, even 2 for pet, if she’d like, but do not write any names on the note.

Each person would do the same thing. Then everyone will fold their notes tightly, put them in a container and mix them up. Mom or Dad will hide the notes all over the house and the kids have to find the notes. When they have found all the notes, the family would get together read the notes and try to guess who each note is about. I think that would make for a very meaningful and cherished family time. Tweak the game to suit your family. Download heart shaped cut-outs below.

lettertogod

Have your children or everyone in the family write a letter to God, as kids would write a letter to Santa at Christmas. Instead of asking for things, this letter would be like a psalm (a letter of praise) to God. Honoring God for who He is and how He has blessed their lives.

Before all the Valentine’s Day festivities, encourage and assist your children in making a Valentine’s Day gift for their friends. I think these Valentine Play Dough Cookie pops, would make a very special Valentine’s Day Gift for a few of their very special friends. Go to the art supply store and get some pretty packaging to put them in. Have the children make little Valentine’s Day cards too, if there is time or you could download free printable cards (there all over the place) or buy a package of cards from the same art store.  Help them put the cookies and card in pretty packaging to deliver for the friends (neighbors, cousins, friends at school, etc). Remember to spend a little bible time. Read and discuss memory verses about love. Below are heart shape print-outs of the ICB Version (International Children’s Bible) of  1 Corinthians 13:1-3, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7,  1 John 3: 1-3, Luke 6: 35-36  and Matthew 22:37-38 you can download. Feel free to make bible-time extra special and cut them out, glue them on red or pink card stock and decorate it a little. It’s all about fun and love.

I am not recommending any particular book, other than to make sure it is a book that nourishes your children’s mind. Kids love being read to and/or reading a book with their parents. That is a very special bonding time with their parents that they will cherish into adulthood.
